If you are suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, police may use a series of field sobriety tests (FST) to determine whether you are under the influence of an intoxicant or drug.  You may also be asked to provide a blood or breath sample and other tests. The results obtained from these tests can then be used to prosecute you if your blood alcohol level is more than the allowed limits.

The field sobriety testing procedure utilized by police may not always be correct.  If you have been charged with an OWI or DUI, your priority is to save your driving privileges and avoid jail.  Get in touch with an experienced OWI and DUI attorney. At Eisenberg Law Offices, S.C. What Types Of Field Sobriety Tests Are Used?

Field Sobriety Tests are conducted if a driver is suspected of being intoxicated. These are physical and cognitive tests to measure sobriety, balance and impairment and include the following standard tests:

  • The one-leg stand
  • Walk and turn
  • The HGN or horizontal gaze nystagmus test

There may also be some non-standardized tests, such as:

  • Counting on your fingers
  • The ABC test, reciting the alphabet
  • Counting backwards
  • The Rhomberg stationary balance test where the individual stands with feet together and leans the head back to look up at the sky with arms held out at the sides
  • The finger to nose test where the driver closes his/her eyes and brings the finger around to touch the nose
